This programme most directly explores the relationship between Schumann and JS Bach. The Canonic Etudes, rewarding works in their own right, illustrate Schumann’s polyphonic studies, whilst the ebullient piano quartet is rich in fugal and contrapuntal writing. Bach’s Art of Fugue is his final, unfinished masterpiece: the summation of a life’s work.
